Cynosure Picosure 755 with Focused Array Lens (Picosecond Technology)

The Picosecond Lasers represent the latest and newest generation of laser technology.

How it works?

Picosecond lasers work by delivering ultrashort laser pulses in the picosecond range or within a trillionth of a second. The laser is 100x faster than most other lasers and capable of delivering quick results with fewer treatments. Originally intended to be the best laser technology for tattoos and all types of pigmentary issues, the companies working with Pico technology have developed a system to concentrate the picosecond laser energy even further.

In the case of Cynosure Picosure laser (first company to develop the Pico technology), it is the only Picosecond laser to harness 755nm in their proprietary “Focus Lens Array” (FLA) system to produce concentrated micro photo-mechanical cavities under the skin coined “LIOB” (laser induced optical breakdowns). It is the LIOB which allows production of new collagen and elastin for significant improvement of wrinkles and acne scars. Cynosure Picosure laser has proven to be so effective that it has received FDA clearance for treatment of tattoos, pigmentary conditions, acne scars, and wrinkles.

What makes this system so unique is that due to its rapid delivery of laser light, the energy imparted onto the unwanted pigments in the skin is more “mechanical” rather than the traditional “thermal” energy, resulting in minimal chance of hyper-pigmentary issues. As a result, it has become a very popular treatment of choice for patients with dark spots or melasma issues seeking latest technology for “toning” treatment of their pigmentary issues. Also due to photo-mechanical energy, substantial collagen and elastin production for treatment of wrinkles and repair of acne scars can be achieved, now with even less down time in terms of prolonged redness and hyper-pigmentary issues. Picosecond lasers as a result has become the most sought after laser for medium to darker colored patients looking to improve any combination of wrinkles, acne scars and pigmentary issues. In fact, it is the best and the latest technology to treat tone and texture issues of the face for patients with all skin colors seeking the least downtime and chance of side effects to date.

Usually 3 to 6 treatments spaced 3 to 4 weeks apart. However, even after one session, most patients are pleasantly surprised by the noticeable improvement, especially when it comes to pigmentary issues. Some patients, especially with pigmentary issues such as melasma will benefit with maintenance treatment on a periodic basis.

Most patients will note certain degree of redness and swelling immediately after the procedure just like you been slapped on the face. Depending on the sensitivity of your skin and the condition being treated, the redness and swelling can last as short as a few hours to as long as overnight. Because the redness is not from a thermal effect, but more from mechanical-acoustic effect; as dramatic as the redness appears, it dissipates very quickly compared to any other conventional lasers out there. It is quite remarkable. Obviously the sooner the redness goes away, less the chance of post inflammatory hyper-pigmentation and less down time, making it as close to “ideal” laser for medium to darker colored patients like Asians. Although most patients can return to work the following day, if not immediately on the day of, we nevertheless ask our patients to reserve one day for recovery following the first session to be on the safe side.
